Drag'n Thrust took 2nd place at 2011 Central Regionals. This was good enough to qualify for the USA Ultimate Club Championships at the end of the month in Sarasota, Florida. Drag'n looks forward to competing against 16 of the best teams in North America for the USAU title.

MUDI Champions!

On July 23rd and 24th the Drag'ns went out to Maple Plain to compete in MUDI 2011.

The morning met us with lightning and storms, so with a delayed start we set out on our mission. We played Stud Muffin first, who will continue to be a strong competitor at Sectionals and Regionals. The score didn't indicate the competition in this game, each point was hard fought, but we ended up on top 13-2.

Next up was Free Ride who had a rough tournament in (our biased opinion) a very good pool, 13-2.

Last pool play game of the day was against NOISE, who always gives us some competition at Regionals reminded us to keep our heads in the game and play hard. It was very close through half, but we pulled away after that: 13-8.

Then was the cross-over. We had the honor of crossing over with A pool winner, CLX. This was a hard fought game that went to universe point and we pulled it out in the end: 12-13.

Sunday morning brought us into the championship bracket and a rematch against Stud Muffin. This time more points went their way and made the score more closely reflect the game but we pulled it out 15-10.

Next up in the semi-finals game was Faround. They kept it close in the very beginning and started to make a comeback at the end, but it was too late when the game finished 15-7.

In the finals we got a rematch with CLX, which proved to be a longer game with a few more breaks. It was real close the entire game, the cap went on at 13-12 (game to 15) in CLX's favor. But the Drag'ns pulled out the last three to finish off the game 15-13.

Congratulations Drag'n Thrust! Take a Drag'n nap and rest those injuries up, we'll see you in Chicago for Heavyweights (CHC)!

Q: What if I want to tryout for other teams too?
A: We're happy to compete for players, so long as lines of communication are open. Please talk to us about your situation! (And know that anyone who is undecided is very welcome to attend tryouts and give us a try.)

Q: How do I keep track of workouts, tryouts, practices, tournaments, and Drag'n related social events?

Q: What do Drag'ns do when they aren't playing Ultimate?

A: It's good to notify the captains to stay on our radars. Also if you can't make the first round, be sure to email us to setup an alternate tryout schedule.

Q: Practice players?
A: Yes, we'll be looking for a few, mostly female, to boost our numbers and train potential future Drag'ns. If interested, talk w/ the captains.

Q: I'm concerned about money. Can I afford to play Drag'n?
A: Yes. Club ultimate isn't free, but we work hard to make it affordable. We've got sponsors, free schwag from winning contests, fundraisers, and a reasonable schedule of tournaments. Even our summer "plane ticket" tournament, Philly Invite, is drivable (half the team did it last year). Feel free to discuss your concerns w/ the captains.

Q: Is there a top 10 list somewhere for why I should play for Drag'n?
A: There is now:
10. Drag'n games are fun to play in. We finished 3rd in natties spirit score last season.
9. Captains are organized, communicative, and we care!
8. Between practices, tournaments, team retreat, social events, workouts, etc, we offer extensive opportunities to invest in the season. You will be a better player by the end of the season, and we'll miracle grow as a team too.
7. But we don't expect perfect participation - we know that people have lives and we're understanding.

Sectionals Recap (as written by Dave Klink, with interjections by Robyn)

Saturday Pool Play Games 11-5 over Pelican Breach. We came out fired up. Pelican relied heavily on Sarah Dikeman, who stood out during this game. However, Drag'n played chill, and connected on most of our looks.

11-5 over Faround. Faround hucked early and often, and once Drag'n adjusted a bit and our D line started getting more breaks, generating some turns and connecting on offense to come out on top.

11-4 over scottyface. We got amped up for this one, Jake helped bring that fire and get our team really into the game. Our offense was freakin' terrific in this game - connecting on pretty much everything we attempted

11-1 over Milwaukee's Beast. They had 13 players. They dropped 2 or 3 discs in the endzone that should have been easy catches. We didn't even play very hard, and certainly checked out on the sidelines at times.

11-3 over Midget Horse. Drag'n came out playing hard and dominating the flow of the game in our first meeting against this team. Our sideline intensity picked up and we utilized our entire roster.

Sunday Bracket Play Games

Semifinals: 15-3 over Plowed. We played incredibly together as a team. We looked phenomenal. Our D lines capitalized on every opportunity, and created an awful lot of them. Our Eau Claire D line scored after getting a D. Our Duluth O line also scored after getting a D.

Finals: 15-7 over Evil Twin (Madison Proper). Drag'n's O line came out strong, scoring quickly and efficiently during the first point. Though our first D-point went on a bit long, Drag'n was able to use the sideline energy to push for a 2-0 lead on Evil Twin. Keeping the momentum, Drag'n never gave a break back, and steadily increased our lead until we hit 15. Evil Twin has some fast, athletic players with great hucks and good chemistry--however, our defense was stifling, and was able to earn breaks to keep momentum going in our favor. Our O line had 1 or 2 turnovers all game, and got worked hard to get the disc back when we lost posession. A significant highlight in this game was James Hron's sweet hand block, catch, and full-field huck for a score. James played ridiculous this game. It was one of the best plays all weekend. Alicia had some really outstanding hucks, adding some fire-power to our O-line. It also seemed like Moss and Jeanine really stood out offensively, consistently being open to keep our offensive flow going, taking advantage of poachy D.

With Central Regionals right around the corner, we are continuing our push to earn one of the three bids to our region. Look for us to come out with all guns firing at Maple Plain!

CHC Champs!!

SATURDAY POWER POOL GAMES

Game 1: 15-9 over MethOD (Iowa City, IA). In our first game of the weekend, we played MethOD. This was MethOD's first game of the season, and they were notably missing Zach Eastlund during the weekend. The Drag'n D-line was able to earn several breaks early on in the game, keeping a comfortable lead for the remainder of the game.

Game 2: 15-9 over Steamboat (Cincinnati, OH). In our second meeting with Steamboat, we were able to come out much stronger than in our Cooler Classic match-up in August. The D-line was able to earn several breaks, and our O-line was able to work it against Steamboat. Our strength came from extreme depth of the Drag'n roster, and we were able to maintain a decent lead throughout the game.

Game 3: 13-6 over Plowed (Twin Cities, MN) Sectional rival, Plowed typically comes out strong, and we knew we had to bring it from the first point. The Drag'n intensity exploded from the first point, shutting down the Plowed O-Line point after point

12-10 over Overhaul (Michigan) Overhaul is a very talented team. Led by Colin McIntyre, their handlers were strong with awesome breaks, and fantastic hucks. Drag'n was able to go up on an early 4 point lead, which helped for Drag'n to control the tempo. Both teams made great plays and battled back and forth. Overhaul came back with a couple of breaks in the second half, pulling within 2.

SUNDAY BRACKET PLAY

Quarters. 15-8 over B.O.I. (Cleveland, OH). We came out strong and never took the pedal off the gas. This is just one of the games where Drag'n demonstrated strength in depth and intensity

Semis. 12-9 over MethOD (Iowa City, IA). MethOD beat Madison's Evil Twin on universe to meet us in semis. Though our offense struggled early, with drops and a few poor decisions, we were able to make some adjustments in strategy. Drag'n came back from an early deficit, working hard for breaks with intense defense, taking half 8-7. Defensively strong for the rest of the game after some key adjustments, we were able to earn some more breaks in order to maintin our lead until hard cap ended our game

Finals. 14-7 over Overhaul (Michigan). Overhaul beat CLX 10-8 to get to finals, riding an early lead to hard cap. This was a fun game to play in and watch. In the second match-up between the two teams of the weekend, we fought during every possession. Overhaul has a very talented roster with depth and athleticism in both cutter and handler positions. However, Dragn's defense was intense and worked hard to keep the break throws to a minimum, dictating our downfield match ups. The Drag'n O had some big hucks, and took advantage of good chemistry.

Looking forward to working hard over the next two weeks in practice, plyos, conditioning, etc. Sectionals in Maple Plain, MN is the next stop in our season!

This week, Drag'n Thrust volunteered at Feed My Starving Children, a local organization that is aiming to eliminate starvation among children throughout the world, by boxing donated food and shipping it to communities with children who need more food.

"Our entire group of volunteers packaged up 58 Boxes, 17 of which were packaged by our very own hands (we comprised about 1/5 of the people there). The food we packaged up is going with an emergency shipment to Pakistan and the disaster relief efforts going on over there. We fed 34 kids a meal for a year!"

Cooler Classic XXII

Drag'n started out strong in pool play, going 3-0, with wins over Oh Boy! (13-6), The Strangers (13-4) and Plowed (13-9). In the cross over game, Drag'n was pitted against Steamboat from Cinncinati, OH. Steamboat came out strong, but Drag'n was able to prevail with at 13-11 win.

We enjoyed dinner at the Delafield Brewhaus, sticking around for some free beer and entertainment at the tournament party.

On Day 2, Drag'n had more players and were ready to come out strong in some windy weather. In the quarter finals vs. IBEX, we worked the disc well, but struggled early in the wind. We got it together winning 13-5. The semi-final game vs. Prion was closer than the score indicated. We ended up winning 15-9, after being down early in the game.

The finals game vs. the Chad Larson Experience was intense. Both teams missing huge players on both O and D, and were quite evenly matched. The game was on serve until the Drag'n D line broke on the 3rd point to take a 2-1 lead. After being up 5-2, we traded to the take half with a score of 8-5 . CLX came out strong out of half, picking up a few quick points to take it to 9-10, CLX. Eventually, the game came tied at 12's and an extremely long universe point ensued. Drag'n owned the D during the point, with James Hron and Alex Delegaard tallying several huge D's against male receivers down field. However, Drag'n was unable to convert in the endzone even though we had several unchallenged attempts with open receivers, because we put the disc a bit too far out of the grasp of our receivers. We ended up losing the game 12-13.

Highlights of the weekend included the men owning the skies, most notably James Hron (pictured to the right) and Alex Delegard on D, and Pat Niles on O.Our ladies worked through low numbers and were able to play well all weekend.

We are looking to come out strong after a solid retreat weekend of practice, chalk talk, and bonding in Eau Claire, WI. Pat, along with the Drag'n captains, organized a phenomenal weekend for the team.

Look for a fuller roster and more intensity from your favorite mixed team out of the Twin Cities at the Chicago Heavyweight Championships. CHC will offer a preview to Central Regionals, with good competition from the Chad Larson Experience (Ames, IA), Madison Proper (Madison, WI), Steamboat (Cincinnati, OH), Prion (Champaign-Urbana, IL), Gambit (Chicago, IL), Plowed (Minneapolis, MN) and about 30 other teams.

The weather both days was in the 90's . . . not cold. As will be a theme for tournaments this summer, we didn't have our full roster, but we had enough to survive the heat!

On Saturday, our first game of the season pitted us against Slow White, a perennial nationals contender from Boston, and an all-around fun team. We spotted them 4 points, but then made it more interesting. They surged at the end to pull it out by 2, 11-13. We then played AMP, the home team, and fought our way to a 13-8 victory and our first win of the season. We next beat North Carolina's wHagonweel 13-7, though the game felt much closer with their high level of intensity. Finally, we ran into regional rival Gambit, who may have been out of gas at the end of the day, as we took the game 13-4.

Sunday morning we finished pool play by squaring off against Zojirushi from New York. Zoji struggled to pull it together first thing in the morning, and we took a commanding lead, winning 13-5. We finished 2nd in our pool (behind Slow), placing us in semifinals against the tournament's #1 seed, District 5, a new mixed team based in New Haven, CT. District dispatched us 11-13, and went on to win the tournament. In the 3rd place game, we played the Gun Totin Teddy Bears, and won 15-7.

The turnout this year was really awesome - thanks to everyone who came out for the team. The drawback of the highly competitive field was that we had to make some really tough cuts, of potential returners and rookies alike. Q: What if I can't make tryouts?

A: Email the captains with some information about your Ultimate experience and we'll discuss the possibility of an alternate tryout.

Q: Is Drag'n Thrust fun?

A: Last year we finished 3rd at regionals with 2 bids to nationals and it was still the most fun most of us ever had on an Ultimate team. Positive energy everywhere. Interesting, cool people - jocks and nerds in harmony - can't go anywhere with them without having a blast. 3 bids this year. And the team retreat is gonna rock.

Q: Is playing Drag'n Thrust expensive?

A: Club ultimate isn't free, but we're willing to work with you to make it affordable, and Drag'n is one of the cheaper teams out there to play for. Some of us are driving to Philly, for example. Please talk with the captains if money is the only factor holding you back.

Q: Practice players?

A: Yes! Drag'n will be looking for a few practice players this year, especially on the women's side. Perfect for those who can't make the UPA series, aren't able to make the full financial/time commitment to club, or just want the chance to up their game with us but are a season away from making the UPA roster.

Q: Is it OK if I want to also tryout with another team?

A: Generally yes. There will be a point in our tryout process when we need to know whether you are in or out, but we don't mind a little healthy competition with other teams out there. Contact us to workout details, and keep us informed on your thought process.

Q: What should I bring to tryouts?

A: White and dark shirt, cleats, water, disc, intensity, positive attitude . . .

Q: How long will tryouts/practices run?

A: Typically 2.5 hours.
